NCM is situated on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people. We pay respects to them, especially their Elders and storytellers, as well as all First Peoples, nationwide. NCM acknowledges that communication technologies have a long history here, far longer than European occupation.

Does hearing the word 'quantum' make you want to crumple into a heap of existential confusion?

When someone mentions qubits does your brain turn into the confused maths lady meme ?

Even Einstein was suspicious of Quantum Theory, so how do we stand a chance? Don’t worry, NCM is here to help you and whisper soothing sounds when the Quantum Scaries hit.

We have gathered experts from across Melbourne to guide you through an afternoon explaining the ins and outs, throughs and roundabouts of quantum physics in a way that will have you nodding along and actually understanding what's happening. Our speakers break down the core components of quantum physics into bite sized (and enjoyable) pieces while explaining their areas of research and how it effects the world we live in.

Do you want to impress (and surprise) your friends and family with your theoretical superiority and expertise in Quantum? Then grab a spot in our Quantum Support Group.

This program is free with a museum entry ticket, but ensure you reserve your place so you don't miss out.

There will be a small bar open for purchases of beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages.

Dr Jared Cole

Speaker

Professor Jared Cole is a member of the Physics department of the School of Science at RMIT University and Director of the RMIT Applied Quantum Technologies research centre. He is a theoretical physicist, specialising in quantum theory and its application in electronics, computing and nanotechnology. In contrast to many scientists and science enthusiasts, Jared doesn’t care about the philosophical ramifications of quantum mechanics at all, he just wants to build cool…stuff.

Dr Mitko Oldfield

Speaker

Mitko is a Doctor of Quantum Physics, an avid and peppy communicator, and, unfortunately, British. His PhD focused on creating new technology that doesn’t heat up when used by combining light and matter. It worked, sort of. After receiving his doctorate, he moved away from research to pursue his true passion: making coffee for near-minimum wage (something something terrible job market, something something the economy is in shambles).
