Recorded sound has transformed the way we express ourselves, share stories, and compose music. How might we reimagine the experience of storytelling and listening if our speakers were constructed from fabric or woven from yarn? What stories would ordinary objects record and retell?

Signal to Noise artists Craftwork explore the intersection of textiles and technology through installations, storytelling and research with a particular interest in combining electronics and technology through soft interfaces.

In this video, filmed in Craftworks New York City studio, learn insights into their creative process of research and collaboration and be inspired to create your own woven soft speaker with the step-by-step tutorial created by Craftwork.

Craftwork

Craftwork is a multidisciplinary design and art studio exploring the nature of textiles and technology through installations, storytelling, and material-based research. Founded by Victoria Manganiello and Nicole Yi Messier, their work lives at the intersection of materiality, technology, and experience, drawing inspiration from the histories and futures of soft materials. With a combined more than 20 years of experience, Victoria and Nicole founded Craftwork in 2022 and their backgrounds span art, design, engineering, research, and technology. Combining historical fascination with forward-looking materiality, their skills in traditional textile crafts with emerging technologies bring together large-scale, dynamic projects with a variety of partners.

Signal to Noise

Signal to Noise explores how artists work with, challenge, or complicate the relationship between signals and noise—disruptions, glitches or interference—in communication technologies and the messages they send. These technologies include the internet, telephones, radio and television, artificial intelligence, social media algorithms, and even the sounds of the natural world.
