Weave a secret message inspired by coding and the supercomputer CM-2!

Get creative and craft some code at this drop-in workshop developed by artist and technologist Daisy Watt. Using coloured paper and a digital key, weave letters and messages to make your own piece of code to take home.

Stories about computing often come from unexpected places: did you know that traditional weaving techniques inspired modern computing and coding? In this workshop you’ll discover more about the links between weaving and computing and how coding is for everyone.

Make sure to take a look at the glorious CM-2 in Radical Computing, and see Daisy’s artwork 12 Dimensions, a tapestry encoded with secret messages for you to uncover, inspired by the CM-2.

This workshop is best suited for ages 5 yr +. Grown-ups, stick around for the workshop, small curious hands will need some help.

Weaver & technologist

Daisy is a weaver and a coder, seeing both as expressions of the same practice. After a decade as a studio weaver, freelance textile designer, and educator, she watched the struggling textile industry vanish under the pressures of 2020. Her expansion into software engineering prompted by necessity, became a strategic experiment: a way to anchor her practice while investigating the deep knowledge transfer between craft and code. By navigating complex digital systems without a formal computer science degree, she proves that the devalued hand-skills of the past are the actual foundation of modern engineering. For Daisy, bridging these worlds ensures that craft logic doesn't become a silent artifact. She argues that the problem-solving skills found in the studio are the most resilient database we have, and they remain the only way to truly understand and move, the systems of the future.
